Lampwork Beads
"Lampworking" is an ancient bead making process that originally got its name because the artist used wax or oil lamps to melt glass. Today's bead makers have replaced the oil lamp with a torch. All of my lampwork beads are individually handcrafted in the torch flame, formed and decorated by layers of molten glass on a stainless steel mandrel. I use rods of Italian soda lime glass, also called Moretti or Effetre glass, to form and embellish the bead. The finished creation is then carefully kiln annealed for lasting beauty and durability. The kiln is a very important step in the process. It cools my lampwork beads slowly, avoiding internal stresses that can cause other beads to eventually crack with handling or temperature changes. I use my lampwork beads and sterling silver in all of my jewelry.
Each handmade bead becomes a unique piece of artwork. Please understand that no two beads are ever completely identical. Each is a fun & beautiful one-of-a-kind creation. Enjoy browsing my website!
